Re: model calibration

Fifteen years later, is there still no way to combine lines and dots in a custom graph?

Re: Best practice to avoid data warnings?

Good thought! But unfortunately no. Viewing the model as text (so as to grab the syntax exactly), then copy and paste into a .cin file: :C Constant file for B Const B = 0 ~ unit ~ comment | Running the model gives the following errors: ERROR: FILE:B.cin, line 3 : Bad line in file, not recognized. ~ ...

Re: Best practice to avoid data warnings?

Following up, I tested whether a "recognizable value format" would work, like Vensim code: ERROR: FILE:B.cin, line 2 : Too many values or unrecognizable value format. Const B = 2 ~ units ~ comment |. ------------^. The alternative in-line comment with curly braces also throws a warning. ERROR: FILE:...

Re: Best practice to avoid data warnings?

Jumping on this thread, how can we avoid errors when reading in .cin files with comments? Vensim help says anything after a tilde (~) in a .cin file is a comment. See: https://www.vensim.com/documentation/cin_files.html This is useful to indicate the units of the constants, for example. But the tild...

Re: Passing string constants through a data file

I get basically the same result.

I should have mentioned that the .cin file for my test had three elements. Only the element in the .cin file but not in the model causes the error. Sample model and both .cin files attached.

Rob

Re: VECTOR SELECT unweighted units

Erratum:
for numerical_action = 1, the units check should be
units(Result) = PROD(units(selection_array*expression_array))
for numerical_action = 7, the units check should be
units(Result) = PROD(units(expression_array))

But you get the idea

VECTOR SELECT unweighted units

Hi, I'm using VECTOR SELECT to perform SUM and VMIN type calculations on large matrices. Say Result = VECTOR SELECT(selection_array, expression_array, ..., numerical_action, ...), Units checking appears to look for units(Result) = units(selection_array)*units(expression_array). This is correct when ...

Are they errors or warnings? We changed the behaviour some time ago so that if an error was encountered, you could still contine.
The messages are errors.

Re: Passing string constants through a data file

The application is supply chain for raw materials. There are ~1600 finished goods, and ~7300 raw parts. Since the FG and raw part names are long and awkward, I'd rather define subscript names in a convenient way, FG : (f1-f600) and part: (r1-r7300) Since I cannot remember what part number r4545 is, ...

Passing string constants through a data file

Hi, I can pass string constants through a .cin file. But when I am interested to use only a subset, I get errors like "Too many values or unrecognizable value format" and "bad type, incorrectly subscripted or not found". I'd like to avoid .cin input errors by having all model data, including string ...

Custom plot string labels

Hi, The Vensim help https://www.vensim.com/documentation/ref_get_var_vals.html describes the \/ method for displaying a string variable for a variable label in a custom plot. The example shows how this method works for two elements. Can the method also work when the name of the range is passed inste...

Re: can't print to pdf (mac)

Follow-up: the guidance from 2010 for Mac appears still to work (*). Select portions of a CLD, Edit > Copy. Open Preview App, then File > New from Clipboard will "paste" what was on the clipboard. Preview allows save to pdf. This even works for a single custom graph. (*) This appears not to work for...

Re: can't print to pdf (mac)

Using Vensim 8.2.1 on Mac (DSS and PLE), and having the same issue. File > Print Preferences dialog shows *no* printers from which to select, not even a print-to-pdf options. Is this a Mac setting thing, telling Mac OS which applications can access the printer?

SMOOTH3 *is* implemented in Ventity. The attached revision is closer to the Vensim implementation of World 3. (Baseline results are practically indistinguishable from the earlier version.)

I've been using Ventity on a MacBook Pro (ca 2019), running Catalina, Parallels Desktop with a full Windows 10 environment. (Yes, you need to pay for Parallels AND Windows.) Ventity works well, as does Vensim.

Persistent Lookup Plots

Hi, I'd like to make a Vensim view that shows graphs of all the lookup tables in a model. Ideally this would be a custom graph, so if I edit the lookup table then I can see the changes. I can hack this as follows: dummy output = LUT(dummy input), then make a custom plot of dummy output using dummy i...

Re: Units (Millions and Billions)

Before we fix the bug, let's make sure it isn't a feature! There are a number of ways Excel can display numbers with a suffix, without changing the underlying number. It would be great if Ventity supported one or more of these when copy-and-pasting, or saving-as. (1) Excel can display numbers with a...

Re: Ventity Optimization dialog a bit wonky?

FWIW, the optimization itself seems to work fine. The optimization dialog does correctly read in a working optimization: it is possible to view all the parameters and values. It seems not possible to change them.

Re: Ventity Optimization dialog a bit wonky?

The Optimization dialog appears to be completely broken. Symptoms: I can create the start of an optimization, but when I try to define the payoff function there's a problem. The Entity and Variable fields are pre-populated, apparently by picking the first in an alphabetical list. While this might se...
