Vensim PLE MAC v8 unstable on student machine II

My students are using 8.2.1 and there is a recurring bug when using the SyntheSim tool. The screen goes blank, the 'stop simulation' button does nothing so they can't exit the active simulation. The only thing that returns to the initial model is force quitting the programme.

One student who is running OS version Catalina (10.15.7) reported no problems.

Any advice about how to fix this would be most welcome because the need to use the SyntheSim tool for their homework this week and for their assignment!

I have the same problem, but also another issue that's easier to check. I'm running Vensim PLE for Mac 8.2.1 on a 2016 MacBook Pro with OS X 10.15.7. If I start Vensim and create a New Model, then click through the model settings I get the usual blank canvas. From there clicking Model > Settings in the menu bar does nothing. I can't get the Model Setting window to appear again. Trying to run "Check Model" on the same menu also gives me an error dialogue: "Stop: Open a Model".
