New System Engineering Web Ring

Post by "Nic Plum" »

What is the System Engineering Web Ring?
________________________________________

A web ring is a collection of web sites which are linked in a circular ring
and which are of a common theme. Each site contains a page with a common set
of hypertext links which allow the surfer to skip forwards, backwards, list
all member sites, jump at random and join the web ring.
A new System Engineering webring has been created (the old one got deleted
by mistake) which aims to provide linkages between sites which are related
to system engineering. This might be providers of tools but equally it might
be educational bodies, professional organisations or home pages which have a
system engineering theme. It also includes soft systems methodologies and
techniques or disciplines such as system dynamics, synthetic environments,
requirement management et al.

How Does It Work?

The first step is to join the ring. This can be done via a simple form at
http://www.eclectica-systems.co.uk/forms/fmadtorg.htm. This asks for simple
things about your site and contact details for yourself. Once submitted the
site is queued.

You simply add the common HTML fragment to the page you specified on your
web site. Once this has been verified you then get added to the ring. You
get an e-mail confirmation at each step which provides you with your own
password to maintain your own details e.g. site URL, contact details etc.

I do the donkey work behind administering it and keeping it ticking. BT just
love me!

What Are the Benefits?
______________________

The benefits are:-

*your site gets linked to like-minded ones
*the potential surfer is more likely to fall within a system engineering
net - it saves them wasting time with random searches and once within a
themed set of information theyre more likely to go wandering and to come
back again knowing that they can find it.
* everyone on the ring is likely to get more visits to their web sites
* we increase our chances to spread the message concerning system
engineering to those who might otherwise miss us
* we act more like the "whole" than individual parts

Its time we acted in a more organised fashion and got out of acting as
individual islands. After all, were probably all working towards the same
set of goals.

Itd be nice to think that we can do this off our own backs without waiting
for some missive on high!

What Does it Cost?

Absolutely nothing. This isnt a commercial thing and the time put in is
purely done on an altruistic basis.
