System Dynamics and Environmental Management
Paula Antao recently asked where she might attend a "System Dynamics Short
Course applied to Environmental Management."
We at Sustainability Institute (www.sustainabilityinstitute.org) recently
ran such a course for a group of University professors and environmental
managers. In the future, we will be running similar courses when there is
an interested group and have modest foundation funding to support such work.
Ive also heard that Tom Fiddaman has run such a short environmental
modeling course through his work at Ventana Systems (www.vensim.com), and if
he hasnt, he could do so in short order. Further, someone looking for
distance learning (and interested in saving airplane fuel) can take MITs
"Environmental Dynamics" course, organized by Jim Hines and taught by Andy
Ford, who has written the strongest text on the application of SD
specifically to environmental issues, Modeling the Environment. More on the
MIT course at http://caes.mit.edu/asp/off_campus/system_dynamics/ .

System Dynamics and Environmental Management
Hello Everybody,
Could some of you suggest me places and dates to attend a "Systems
Dynamics Short Course applied to Environmental Management"?
I am starting my Ph.D. on Environmental Management within a Watershed in
the New University of Lisbon (Portugal, Europe).
My best regards,
Paula

System Dynamics and Environmental Management
Dear Paula,
Last November we offered a 50-hour course on Environmental Assessment, where
students learned to enhance Environmental Impact Statements with System
Dynamics modelling. I am sure this is not exactly what you are looking for,
plus its already past, but it had a very strong SD component and relevance
to environmental systems. The course will be repeated in November 2003.
There is another 50-hour course coming up in April 2002, on Environmental
Auditing, where the students will have some opportunity to apply SD in
Environmental Management Systems. Here, the SD component will be much less,
as their principal objective is to dominate ISO 14001 and EMAS procedures.
Please, have a look for the syllabi of the above courses at
http://ambiente.utad.pt or at the "classes" section of the EDAW, at
www.utad.pt/~tasso/edaw.
Best of luck
