PROGRAM: The main theme of this years conference is "Organizational
Change Dynamics - Understanding Systems, Managing Transformation."

SPECIAL SESSIONS AND CONVENED SESSIONS:

***Russell L. Ackoff and Peter M. Senge will talk about THE DYNAMIC
CONCEPT OF AN ENTERPRISE and MANAGING AND LEADING ORGANIZATIONS AS
COMMUNITIES respectively. Conceptual transformations to management and
organizations in an enterprise, and the evolving qualities of
organizations as human communities will be discussed. Russell L. Ackoff is
Anheuser-Busch Professor Emeritus of Management Science at The Wharton
School, University of Pennsylvania, an author and co-author. Peter M.
Senge is a Senior Lecturer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
and Founding Chair of the Society for Organizational Learning (SoL),
author and co-author.

***An Expert View of the System Dynamics Modeling Process: Concurrences
and Divergences Searching for Best Practices in System Dynamics Modeling.
This presentation will be a facilitated face-to-face discussion concerning
best practices among participants (Society presidents and award winners)
in this ongoing research study, followed by open questions and discussions
from the audience. The presenters include George P. Richardson, Professor
at the Nelson A. Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy,
University at Albany, State University of New York, author and co-author.
Ignacio J. Martinez is a PhD student concentrating in system dynamics at
the University at Albany.

***In addition to regular parallel sessions, this year there are some
themed convened sessions. Topics include: Mediterranean Energy &
Environment; Finance; Petroleum; Electricity Based Energy; Optimization;
Competing and Strategizing in Network Economies; Business Strategy and
Small- to Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

The program will also include hands-on workshops and tutorial sessions led
by senior people in the field. Also scheduled are panel discussions,
special interest group sessions, student colloquia, vendor displays,
exhibits, and demonstrations. This year, to accommodate the growing
interest and attendance in workshops, all workshops are scheduled for the
last day of the conference, Thursday, August 1. The workshops will run in
parallel sessions between 8 am and 1 pm. The titles of the Thursday
workshops are listed below. In addition to the Thursday workshops, the
second annual Modeling Assistance Workshop is tentatively scheduled to
take place in the exhibit area for the duration of the conference. A
post-conference workshop is scheduled for Thursday afternoon and Friday.

-POST CONFERENCE WORKSHOP scheduled for Thursday afternoon and Friday
until 2 pm. (July 31 - August 1): Third Annual Strategy Dynamics Workshop:

fundamentals and application of the Strategy Dynamics approach. Topics
will include: an overview of Strategy Dynamics, the resource-based view,
creating strategic architectures, and pedagogical issues regarding
Strategy Dynamics. Break out session will be offered in an effort to
accommodate issues confronted by both practitioners and educators. There
will be a participant cost to cover operating expenses. Participants
should bring a laptop computer (if you have one). This course is
classified for "everyone."

PhD STUDENT COLLOQUIUM: This third annual event is scheduled to meet on

ON-SITE AND CONFERENCE ACCOMMODATIONS: There are 65 rooms reserved at the
discounted conference room rate for attendees at the conference venue
(Grand Hotel Villa Igiea) and 120 rooms reserved at the discounted
conference room rate for attendees at the sister hotel, Grand Hotel et Des
Palmes. The Villa Igiea is located on the outskirts of the city. The Des
Palmes is located downtown, a short walk from museums and shops. A shuttle
bus runs between the two hotels. The trip takes about 10 minutes by bus,
depending on traffic. Walking distance is approximately 20 - 25 minutes
between the two hotels. Depending on availability, both hotels will honor
the discounted conference room rate for stays before or after the
conference dates of July 28 - August 1, 2002. If you prefer to stay
elsewhere, or if the above-mentioned rooms are sold out, please contact

Reservations for rooms at the Grand Hotel Villa Igiea and the Grand Hotel

LUNCH at the Conference Site - Villa Igiea: Lunches on Monday, Tuesday and

-Weather: Typically, in July the temperatures oscillate from about 28 C
(83 F) to 30 C (87 F).

-Tipping: In general, tipping or gratuity in restaurants and for other
instances is appreciated and is typically 10% for satisfactory service.

-Dress Code: Dress will be casual, except for the dinner on Tuesday

REGISTRATION PROCESS: Make your room reservation by FAX with the hotel or
with Sicilia Dreams. Next, please complete the conference registration
form with payment information, and fax or post it to the address
indicated. Registrations can also be made by telephone with a credit card.
Upon receipt of the completed registration form, a confirmation will be
sent.

The conference registration fee includes attendance for one person at all
regular conference functions (all Sessions, Presentations and Meetings,
Informal Gathering, Wine Tasting Welcome Reception, Lunches on Monday,
Tuesday and Wednesday, Coffee/Tea Breaks, and Banquet). You may invite a
guest to the Informal Gathering and Wine Tasting Welcome Reception at no
additional cost. Copies of the printed abstracts and the CD proceedings

Cancellation policy: Any cancellation or change in conference
registration must be submitted in writing to the Society office.
Cancellations before June 26, 2000 are subject to a cancellation fee of
50%. Thereafter, no refund will be given; however, a registration may be
transferred to a substitute participant.
