This List, The System Dynamics Society, and...

Post by "J Mukherjee" »

Greetings:

This topic has been discussed before, but the technology may exist now to
implement even more useful, automated solutions.

For what it is worth, there is a keyword-searchable mailing list archive on
my site at
www.optimlator.com

I havent updated it since early 2001, but will if there is sufficient
interest (you can search email SD archives going back to 1994 on any topic
through January 2001).

There is also a discussion board at www.optimlator.com/discus/ It has been
used occasionally by people, mostly by those looking for jobs in system
dynamics/operations research. This is a very powerful format as it can take
away the need (IF successful!!) for me, or someone else, to maintain the
optimlator archive mentioned above. I hoped it to be as useful as the
Microsoft keyword-searchable knowledge base (for system dynamics!!). It
never became very popular - I think because the gurus are already familiar
with the issues so they dont have to revisit these topics, system dynamics
is not as popular as other technologies, and the novices could use the
search engine, or got their questions answered by someone on the list.

Personally I like website-based discussions as I get too many emails per
day. This way I can go to the website and search for answers when I need to.

I also found discussion boards very useful for creating application help
systems - see www.optimlator.com/hnm for an example of a database
application that I designed. It is simple and useful. Something like this
may be easily used to create an SD FAQ.

Regards

I do appreciate that, Jaideep. Its been handy on occasion.

What about something like the learning-org list uses? As far as I can
tell, theyve set up a Hypermail system (free), added it as one of the
subscribers, and thus all messages are automatically archived and made
available via the Web. MHonarc is another free system like Hypermail.

Ill place my vote for plain text email for this list; I find I rarely
have the time to go to the Web for those few Web discussions Im
supposedly part of. (Thats different from my experience when Im
actively working with others using a Web site.)
