EMBEDDING DYNAMIC THINKING IN BUSINESS
A One-Day Summer Seminar of the
UK Chapter of the System Dynamics Society

London Business School
Tuesday 18th June 2002 - 10:30am to 4:30pm

Introduction
Dynamic thinking in organisations is the collective ability to understand
the implications of change over time. This skill lies at the heart of
successful strategy. Contemporary visual modelling and simulation enable
management teams to boost their dynamic thinking by rehearsing strategy to
avoid hidden pitfalls. As John Quelch, former Dean of London Business School
has noted:
"We are living in a world revolutionised by four decades of exponential
growth in computing speed, where powerful computers have become consumer
electronics and simulation has become virtual reality. In this world,
business modelling has come of age."

Todays Challenge for Organisations
Nevertheless organisations are a long way from embedding dynamic thinking so
it becomes a normal part of strategic management; integrated within the
fabric of team meetings, planning, decision making and implementation.
This one-day summer seminar brings together two well-known academic speakers
to share their experiences of developing concepts and tools for dynamic
thinking. Each speaker has led efforts to disseminate visual modelling,
team learning and strategy simulation in both the private and public
sectors.

Outline for the Event

Part 1 - Speakers Presentations (with demonstrations and discussion)

1. John Morecroft, London Business School
"Disseminating Dynamic Thinking"

2. Kim Warren, London Business School
"Meeting Management Needs - a Focus on Performance"

Part 2 - Participants Forum (breakout groups followed by plenary
discussion)
An opportunity for participants to interact with each other and the speakers
in order to devise practical initiatives for embedding dynamic thinking in
their own organisations. Breakout groups will be followed by facilitated
plenary discussion led by Jonathan Coyle of HVR Consulting Services Ltd.

This will be followed by a short informal social to close the days event.
