Santafe de Bogota, August 7/ 1996
Hello everybody, How are you?.
My name is Carlos Eduardo Ni=F1o, I=92m an industrial engineering of=
Universidad
de los Andes in Bogota (Colombia) South America. Actually I am studying a
master degree in industrial engineering in the same University.
I have interest to know the expert opinion about the integration of two
methodologies: Systems Thinking and Decision Theory.
My interest start because I am working in a tutorial (class of
investigation) whit the professor Luis Pinz=F3n. He suggests that we can=
write
you a letter looking for one expert opinion about our investigation.
I have an industrial engineering friend ( Mart=EDn Alonso Gil Navia) and=
he=92s
my partner in this project, We hope you can help us with your opinion.=20
Thanks for your time and I hope you will answer me as soon as possible

Systems Thinking and Decision Theory
At least two universities in the world link system dynamics and decision
theory in the way they organize their degree programs. One is the London
Business School, where John Morecroft pursues system dynamics work with
colleagues who include Derek Bunn in decision science. Here at the
University at Albany the two areas are linked in our PhD concentration
called Decision and Policy Sciences. We have five faculty and a bunch of
graduate students split between decision science and system dynamics. We
see system dynamics as a part of the problem defintion and analysis phase
of decision making, and decision science as focusing on the choosing
phase, so it is natural for us to link the two areas.
An article that shows some of the linking in practice is
Reagan-Crincione, Schuman, Richardson and Dorf, Decision Modeling: Tools
for Strategic Thinking, Interfaces 21,6 (Nov-Dec 1991).

Systems Thinking and Decision Theory
And for more formal system dynamics, theres the MIT EE subdepartment and
Ph.D. program in Control Theory and Decision Science. (and its < 1/2 mi.
from the Sloan Schools system dynamics group).
