stocks & flows and ODEs

Post by Nicola BIANCHI »

If the Bill Harris quote (SD2366)

See "Converting Signed Digraphs to Forrester Schematics and Converting
Forrester Schematics to Differential Equations" by J. R. Burns, IEEE Trans.
Sys., Man, Cyber. Vol. SMC-7, No. 10, Oct. 1977, pp. 695-707. (I was going
through some old files, and, no, I didnt reread it

would arouse anybodys curiosity, there is a sequel of references:

BURNS, James R., O.M. Ulgen and H.W. Beights, "An Algorithm for
Converting Signed Digraphs to Forrester Schematics", IEEE Trans. on
Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Vol. SMC-9, No. 3, March 1979, pp. 115-124

ASSOULINE, Gilles, "An Algorithmic Method for Large Scale System
Dynamics Modeling", CREST course on simulation techniques for
dynamic socio-economic systems, Arzachena (Sardinia, Italy),
October 1981 [presumably a compendium of his PhD thesis "Aide
a` lanalyse et a` la construction des grands modeles de la
Dynamique des Systemes" at the University of Paris IX Dauphine]

RAMOS, Juan M., "Some modification to the Burns Algorithm", IEEE
Trans. on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics, Vol. SMC-13, No. 1,
Jan/Febr. 1983, pp. 108-110

DOLCI, Paolo V. and M.A. Puddu, "INFLOW: From Influence to Flow
Diagram in System Dynamics", Proceedings of the 1985 International
Conference of the Systems Dynamics Society, Vol. I, pp. 186-193,
Keystone, Colorado

GONZALES, J.C. and G. Fernandez, "EASDM: An Expert Aid for System
Dynamics Modelling", Proceedings of the 1986 International
Conference of the Systems Dynamics Society (SD: On the Move),
Vol. 2, pp. 1019-1027, Sevilla, Spain.

Dropping down this list, I wondered whether the SD software
developers (STELLA, Vensim, Powersim, etc.) make (or made) use of these
algorithms in their packages. Perhaps, they could satisfy my curiosity.
Thank you.

stocks & flows and ODEs

I lost the original, but there have been a couple of comments about
converting stocks & flows to ODEs.

See "Converting Signed Digraphs to Forrester Schematics and Converting
Forrester Schematics to Differential Equations" by J. R. Burns, IEEE Trans.
Sys., Man, Cyber. Vol. SMC-7, No. 10, Oct. 1977, pp. 695-707. (I was going
