6th Annual Conference
Harrogate 5th-6th February 2004
UK Chapter of the System Dynamics Society

This conference is the UKs key event for all those currently practising or
interested in learning about System Dynamics. The System Dynamics method is
a fundamental and powerful approach to solving business operations, planning
and strategy issues, public policy and investment priorities, in addition to
its widespread use in social and scientific research. If you are involved
in any of these areas, you will find this conference very rewarding and
enjoyable.

Benefits from attending:
* Hear and learn from leading experts as they present aspects of their
latest work and research;
* Participate in parallel breakout sessions designed for sharing
knowledge;
* Contribute your own issues and experience;
* Network with fellow practitioners and academics;
* Attend workshops designed to broaden your understanding and skills.

Keynote Speakers:
Mr. James P. Thompson, Director of Economic and Operations Research at Cigna
HealthCare, a commercially managed organization that administers health care
for over 12 millions Americans. Jim is currently leading efforts to
understand and forecast national economic trends in health care. Before
joining Cigna, Jim consulted in system dynamics to organizations including
The World Bank, U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, AT&, Intel
and Pfizer-Upjohn. From 1975 to 1990, he directed strategy formation for
Kollmorgen Corporation where he was sponsor of MITs National System
Dynamics Model. Jim presents: What Causes That? A System Dynamics Look at
the U.S. Health Care System.

Mr John Swanson, is an Associate at the transport planning consultancy Steer
Davies Gleave, based in London. System Dynamics has proved to be an
excellent way of describing and analysing many of the complex issues that
arise in transport. His talk will be about modelling the dynamic
relationships between transport, land-use, populations, businesses and
infrastructure in urban areas. It builds on the original work done by
Forrester (in "Urban Dynamics") but extends it to include representation of
transport networks, and to recognise spatial aspects of the town or city.

Dr. Henk Akkermans, Assistant Professor, Eindhoven University of Technology,
presents "Riding the Seven Waves: Mastering Supply Network Dynamics in
Innovation-driven Industries". This is a tour dhorizon of key system
dynamics issues in high tech supply chains.
Strategy Dynamics: building clear cut business strategies. This session
will be run by Dr. Kim Warren, Adjunct Associate Professor at London
Business School. Professor Warrens work captures the interdependencies
between the resources and capabilities of any enterprise, leading to
fact-based architectures that can both explain performance through time, and
be redesigned for radical improvement.

Parallel Sessions:
Strategy Dynamics: building clear cut business strategies. This session
will be run by Dr. Kim Warren, Adjunct Associate Professor at London
Business School. Professor Warrens work captures the interdependencies
between the resources and capabilities of any enterprise, leading to
fact-based architectures that can both explain performance through time, and
be redesigned for radical improvement.

System Dynamics Clinic: comment and advice on using System Dynamics in
practice. The session will be run by Dr. David Exelby, Principal Consultant
at HVR-CSL. Individuals will have the opportunity of posing technical and
methodological questions that will be addressed by Dr. Exelby and other
prominent UK SD experts.
