Dear colleagues
I'm currently carrying out a piece of classical social policy research
looking at the merger of 3 ambulance services. The research method is
qualitative, no numbers to count nor Spearman's rho to contend with.
Rather, I'm trying to use S&F diagrams to illustrate influences, and am
suggesting mental simulation with relatively simple systems but with
multiple feedback loops.
I'm aware that Richardson in Feedback Thought p 341 discussed conceptual
distance. Richmond also talked about the 10K view. But I think I'm
using conceptualisation in a different manner.
Has anyone tried to use any aspect of S&F to help with the conceptualisation
that occupies the minds of qualitative researchers?
Suggestions gratefully received.
Regards
Roy Greenhalgh

Roy,
You might contact Fran Ackermann at Strathclyde University. I believe that at group of Masters students have done some work using S&F diagrams in this way. Regards, Alan

Policy from S&F Diagrams

In our two studies for Land and Water Australia, we did this with regard to the creation of policy and instruments for sustainability. The first study (2000) is ""A Cartography of Natural Resource Law"" and the second is ""50,000 Australians: Is sustainabilty possible"". Downloads of both are available from the website of the Australian Centre for Agriculture and Law at wwww.une.edu.au/aglaw.
There is also a book based on this work
Sustainability Strategy
>From Federation Presss in Australia (just google their website and you
>can
purchase on line if you wish).
This approach is something we are using more frequently with regard to the complex issues of natural resource management policy. Cheers
