models of forests and forest economies

hi Andrew
sorry i havent replied to this earlier but i have been out of town
a lot lately
i did my PhD research at the University of Bradford Management Centre
with Prof Geoff Coyle in the early 80s and the following were produced :
Cavana, R.Y. 1983. Managing the Plantation Forests in New Zealand: a
system dynamics study in the design of robust policies...
Unpublished Ph.D. Thesis. University of Bradford, England. 400pp
Cavana, R.Y. and R.G. Coyle. 1984. A Policy Analysis Model for New
Zealands Plantation Forestry System. N.Z. Journal of Forestry. 29(1).
pp24-50
Geoff Coyle refers to this work in his recent book (in Chapter 10, pp
309-314). Also a full listing of the model is provided on the
computer disk with his book:
R.G.Coyle (1996). System Dynamics Modelling: a practical approach.
Chapman Hall, London
Our work at Bradford developed from my earlier collaborative work between
the NZ Forest Service & the NZ Ministry of Works, which was a initial
attempt to look at the regional economic impacts of forestry. the
following working paper was produced:
Grant, H.E., A.W. Smith, A.M. Bartlett, R.Y. Cavana and K.D. Lowen.
1979. A Users Guide to the MWD Forestry Model. Development and
Programming Branch, Ministry of Works and Development, Wellington.
33pp
however our Bradford work was more concerned with forestry policy &
management rather than the linkages between forestry & the economy
we found the earlier work by Jorgen Randers et al (1979) and Steven
Boyce (1977, 1979, 1980) very helpful for our research:
Randers, J., L.Stenberg & K.Kalgraf (1979) The forest sector in
transition, Resource Policy Group, Oslo, Norway (GRS 93E3)
Boyce, S.G (1977) Management of Eastern Hardwood forests for multiple
benefits (DYNAST - MB). USDA Forest Service, Southeast, For.Exp.Stn,
Asheville, NC, USA (USDA For serv res papers, SE - 168 (in 1977) ,
SE-184 (in 1978), SE - 204 (in 1980)
i hope these sources are useful. please contact me if i can be of
further assistance.
we also hope you will prepare a paper on your work and present it at
the next International System Dynamics Conference to be held in
Wellington, New Zealand on 2--24 July 1999 !
i would be delighted to meet you and your colleagues and discuss
forestry SD modelling in depth with you
regards, Bob
