Dear all,

This is my first time to post a message to all the list members,
however reading those of others has been most helpful and I have
really learned so much.

I read several books by Eli Goldratt (The Goal, Theory of Constraints,
etc.) and I have realised that there were certain similarities between
SD and TOC. Does anyone come across this issue at all? Any comment
would be appreciated.

The following three articles might be of interest to you.

(i) One of our colleagues, Vicky Mabin, here at the Victoria University
of Wellington, presented a paper at the Oxford conference: 'The Theory
of Constraints and System Dynamics: A Suitable Case for Multimethodology'
by Vicky Mabin, John Davies and James Cox.

(ii) In the Wellington conference in 1999, she presented another paper:
Goldratt's ""Theory of Constraints"" Thinking Process: A Systems Methodology
Linking Soft and Hard"".
(iii) Steven Baldrestone, Vicky's student, also presented a paper in the
Wellington conference on TOC: ""Increasing User Confidence in System Dynamics
Models through use of an Established Set of Logic Rules to Enhance Forrester
and Senge's Validation Tests"".

ABSTRACT
Logic tools from the Theory of Constraints (TOC) provide
the ability to descriptively characterize the entity
relationships responsible for a typical, although somewhat
chaotic, manufacturing environment. Basically through
one-to-one mappings, System Dynamics (SD) models are
created from the TOC logic diagrams. Insights gained
from exercising the SD models are used to establish a new
managerial conceptual framework. This structure guides
managers through the continuous improvement process
relative to addressing either a physical, policy, or paradigm
constraint in their production system.
