Dear HPSIG,

I am planning to propose system dynamic modeling of a medical
assistance program to simulate and test impacts on potential economic,
clinical and (hopefully) humanistic outcomes as a result of policy
changes and program interventions. I was wondering if people could
kindly direct me to essential readings and other similar work.

Hi Sanjoy
There is a vast amount of Literature on Health Policy and Program
Interventions, and much less using System Dynamics Modeling and other
simulation techniques.
The health policy special interest group (HPSIG) of the SD Society now has
over 110 members and will be putting together a more significant online
presence, including a wiki, over the next few months, thanks to Mark
Heffernan's efforts.
Jack Homer, Gary Hirsch, Bobby Milstein, myself and others have compiled
various reference lists in various places.
Key articles on SD and Public Health are due to be published soon in the
American Journal of Public Health, around Nov 2005.
An archive of more recent HPSIG snippets, set up by JAck Homer, is available

A special 1999 Vol 15 No3 issue of the System Dynamics Review on Health is

In the meantime there are some references in the Course Overview of a Health

I also maintain a Spreadsheet and weblinks of health systems simulation

Geoff and group: In addition to the links below, the National Cancer
Institute (NCI) has also developed an effort called Initiative on the Study
and Implementation of Systems (ISIS). This effort is not SD exclusively.
It also includes other modeling approaches such as simultaneous equations
modeling, but also includes network analyses, knowledge
management/informatics, and systems-oriented organizational development
components. An NCI Monograph on systems thinking re tobacco control as an
examplar of addressing other public health problems is in the works, and NCI
just funded this initiative for another 2 years. In addition to NCI,
several other organizations are now collaborating as well, including the
Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the Legacy Foundation and
others. If anyone would like more information, please contact Stephen
