Dear Systemdynamicists!
Reading the German version of Jay W. Forrester's ""World Dynamics"" I ever =
more
think whether this could have been written today without changing a word?
Reflecting on that question I stepped across the article ""Leadership and
Psychology of Turnarounds"" in the HBR On Point, while on my way back from=
a
meeting with some friends organizing a coming lean conference. We have ha=
d
talked
about dynamics of change, I used the change to talk about the possible us=
e of
system dynamics on that question and how it could be helpful. Yet, the ti=
me
seems
not to be ripe as the quick solutions still stay on top being in the way =
for new
systemic thinking (which is essential to follow through to systsem dynami=
cs
-from
my experience).
So reading through the HBR On Point the article grasped my interest as it=
is
about the dynamics in a downturn of a company and why this spirals down (=
similar
to DEC's decline in the 80's). At the end of the article in an explanatio=
n box
the phrase ""system dynamics"" appears (quite small, and you have to have i=
t on
your mental radar to sense that there is more to see) (page 83).
How can we -as systemdynamicsts- contribute to publicly well known storie=
s like
that? There are more readers around and as they get the story it looks li=
ke them
and us are on a similar track to positive policy and sustainable change.
Cheers,
Ralf
PS.: The story would apply quite well for SIG Business in order to prepar=
e a
special session on systemic issues like that.
