Help! (Cannot View Equation Editor Window)

Post by srh2110 »

I'm a student using Vensim for a System Dynamics class. I've created several models fine, however recently I've run into a problem. Whenever I click the equation button, then try to click a variable, no window pops up and my program freezes. Has anybody else had this problem? Did I somehow tweak a view setting? I can still add variables, view simulation results, and do everything else, it just stops working when I click a variable in Equation Mode.

I've sent my models to classmates and they work fine on their computers - they're able to view the equation editing boxes.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.

Nobody has reported anything similar.

What OS are you using, and what version of Vensim?

Dear Administrator,
I have the same problem.
Vensim Version: 5.10e (PLE)
OS-Version: Mac OS 10.6.6
Vensim freezes, every time I try to open the equation manager.
I didn't had this problem with the early Version of Vensim on MacOS ...
I would be glad, if somebody could give any advice.

Regard

We pulled 5.10e off the download site due to a bug, but you apparently were unlucky enough to get it in the few days that it was up. Best option is to revert to 5.10d, which you can now get from http://vensim.com/freedownload.html (the header on the download still says 5.10e, but you'll get the right version).

A workaround would be to use the Windows version with an emulator.

Can you click VensimPLE->About and tell me the version number?

I cannot re-create the error on my Mac here.

Tony.

Tony,
I did downgrade to 5.10d on my MacBook Pro (MacOS 10.6.6) and it didn't fix the bug.
On my iMac (MacOS 10.6.6) the Version 5.10e of Vensim does work (just tried it) - I can't reproduce the error on that system, too.

Very weird ...

Regards

Ulli

P.S. I will try to run Disc Utility and hope that helps.

I'm not as up to speed using Macs as most people. Is there a similar mode to the Windows safe mode that you could try Vensim in to rule out other applications interfering with Vensim?

Tried the Safe-Mode, didn't help - sorry :-(
Repaired the permissions - didn't help
Next step - I will erase every file of vensim and reinstall ...

You could try just throwing out vensim.ini (it'll rebuild a default version).

Sorry Tom, did a search for "vensim.ini" - but wasn't able to find it. Isn't it a Wondows-File?

There is still a vensim.ini for the Mac version.

Go to where you installed Vensim, right click on the Vensim icon and select "Show Package Contents". Double click on "Contents", then "MacOS" and vensim.ini is in there.

Can you email that file to me please (vensim@vensim.com)? Maybe there is a setting in there that will allow me to reproduce the error on my machine here (and that way we can fix it).

Tony.

Tony, thanks for your help.
I just did send you the file.
Deleting the vensim.ini didn't help.

Kind regards

Thanks Ulli, unfortunately that file is identical to the one I already have on my Mac (so we are no further towards solving the problem).

What other software do you have installed?

Tony,
nothing extraordinary ...
iWork 09
Office 2008
Creative Suite CS5
Aperture
Toast
Parallels 6 (Office,Vensim PLE, some minor tools)
Endnote 3X
Livescribe
myText
Filemaker Pro 10
and of course Vensim PLE

I haven't installed any new software within the last weeks (only Apple System updates)

Is it Livescribe desktop you have installed?

What happens if you disable it?

Did PLE ever work properly for you on the Mac?

I'm sure there must be something interfering with Vensim, but I don't know what it is.

Yes it did work - for more than 2 years now ...
After installing the Version 5.10e strange things started to happen. First Vensim froze every time I tried to change the shape colors.
Now the problem with the Equation Editor ...
On my iMac everything works fine (with Version 5.10e).

Very strange.

Hi all,

finally a working solution!
I did create a new user on my MacBook - started Vensim with the new user Account - and now it works like a charm. :D Weird, isn't it? :o
So the problem has something to do with my "old" account.

Glad something finally worked for you! This does make it sound like something to do with the .ini settings.

Hello

I'm facing the same problem. It seems the bug still persist. Can you provide me any hint on how to solve the problem (.ini settings?)

I have installed vensim pro (6.0b). I have used this program for 2 years without problems.
