Dear friends,

I only learned it today that Francisco Varela passed away May 28, 2001 in
Paris aged only 54 suffering from a Hepatitis C infection. His early death
deeply worries and saddens me. Francisco was one of the most outstanding and
prominent scholars in the field of 2nd order cybernetics. His work on
autopoiesis/autonomy and cognition jointly developed with his early
mentor/biologist Humberto Maturana will stand out as one of the major
scientific contributions of the late 20th century I am sure.
