The Arctic System Science Program (ASSP) at NSF has an initiative called
Synthesis, Integration and Modeling Studies (SIMS). It is, as the name
implies, Arctic based, but several people whom I know have used it to develop
more general environmental models using Arctic data. The ASSP wants people to
be integrating data generated through their other initiatives (which cover
everything from physical oceanography to human/environment interactions), but
they will also tell you that models play a key role in the overall design of
the program.

For more information, go to NSFs web site:

http://www.nsf.gov

look for Polar Pograms, then under the Arctic Section, look for ASSP. Or
contact the program manager, Mike Ledbetter:

mledbett@nsf.gov

You may need to find some one already working in the Arctic. There is a
directory of people at:

RE: Funding for Environmental Management SD Model Development-
Does anyone know where a person can apply for funding support to design, develop
and apply SD models for natural resources and environmental management, as well
as ecological research? This is not a trivial question as I have found many
people out there in prospective funding sources are anti-modeling; they only
believe in collecting yet more data.

RE: Constructing 2-D SD models and Linking with GIS-
Does anyone have experience constructing 2-D geographical (either raster-based,
or polygon) environmental SD models? What is the most efficient way to connect
and link such models to, or within, a geographical information system? Which
products modeling software enable this most easily and readily?

You may wish to contact Robbert Associates in Ottawa who have built an impressive
suite of simulation tools, complete with geo-mapping capability and have a track
record of applying it in Australlia.
Contact Robert Hoffman at rhoffman@robbert.ca.

Best of luck
Bob
