Conference Information Update

Hi Everyone,

Attached is updated information on the Atlanta conference of the
System Dynamic society.

Note that the Hotel prices for conference participants include all
meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and are very reaosnable. The
entire facility is booked for the conference. It will be a wonderful
opportunity to chat with lots of people doing system dynamics work and
I encourage everyone to stay at the Conference Center.

*SOME NEW INFORMATION ABOUT THE CONFERENCE*

1. NEW STUDENT AWARD: If you are an eligible student and have not
identified yourself to the Society office, please contact us at
<system.dynamics@albany.edu>. Eligibility criteria: author(s) must be in
a
degree program (full or part-time); co-authors cannot be faculty or
consultants. See the conference website for more information.

2. PhD COLLOQUIUM: The PhD Colloquium was tentatively scheduled for
Sunday, July 22. The schedule has been revised to have the colloquium
meet
on Monday. Details are below.

3. PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP: "Teaching the Dynamics of Strategy"
Following
the popular event held after the Bergen 2000 conference, Kim Warren of
London Business School and Rod Brown of Global Strategy Dynamics are
planning to offer a repeat event on Monday 23rd July, preceding the
start
of the Atlanta conference. This event is for academics and business
people
with an interest in business education or professional development. It
is
expected to run 08:30-18:00 on Monday July 23 and the only costs should
be
an extra night at the conference center and a nominal charge for
materials. Contact <admin@strategydynamics.com> for more information and
to register your interest in this event.

4. ACCOMMODATION
OOM RESERVATIONS AT CONFERENCE CENTER: There have been
a
few problems when trying to make reservations at the conference center.
If
you are told there are no rooms available, please contact Scott Lorusso,
Reservations Manager at the Emory Conference Center, at
<slorusso@ecch.emory.edu> or +1 404 712 6063. At this point in time,
there
are definitely rooms available at the conference center and at the inn
next door.

Atlanta is easily accessible by air via the Atlanta Hartsfield
International Airport.

ON-SITE ACCOMMODATIONS: The Conference organizers strongly encourage you
to stay at the conference center. Our conference will be the only event
at
the conference center and the hub of all our activity will be there.
Reservations for rooms at the conference center and at the Emory Inn
next
door should be MADE DIRECTLY THROUGH the conference center. Please make
your reservations at the Center before June 8. For room reservations,
please call +1 (404) 712-6000 or E-mail your reservation to
<sales@ecch.emory.edu>. Pricing information can be found on the website.
Room space
ates are being held specifically for our conference until
June
8, 2001. After this date, all unused rooms will be released for general
sale. Any reservations received after this date will be accepted on a
space
ate available basis. Hotel and conference registration spaces at
the conference center are limited; make your reservations and register
early! Early and late stay-over (July 21, 22, 27, 28) can be reserved on
a
space-available basis only. The first included meal for our package at
the
conference center is dinner on Monday night; the last meal is lunch on
Friday. Meals for early and late stay-over can be purchased la carte in
the dining room.

Room Cancellation Policy at Emory Conference Center: "Any cancellations
or
no shows after June 23, 2001 will result in the forfeit of the Complete
Meeting Fee."

OFF-SITE ACCOMMODATIONS: We urge you to stay on-site. Participants
staying
off-site must purchase a daily guest pass in addition to registration.
Off-site participants must complete a special off-site registration form
available directly from the Society or downloadable from the conference
website. A limited number of student dormitory rooms located
approximately
a seven-minute walk from the conference center will be available.

PROGRAM: The conference will bring together about 400 participants and
practitioners interested in system dynamics and systems thinking. The
program will include various formats. Plenary sessions will feature
presentations on topics of general interest. Parallel sessions will be
organized by theme and will feature the full range of work being done in
the field. Poster sessions will provide an opportunity for participants
to
engage authors directly on subjects of particular interest. The program
will include interactive workshops led by senior people in the field.
Also
scheduled are panel discussions, special interest group sessions,
student
colloquia, events of historical interest, vendor displays, exhibits, and
demonstrations. System Dynamics Society meetings and related meetings
will
round out the conference. The conference schedule will provide time for
relaxed social and professional interaction.

THE SOCIAL PROGRAM includes the Informal Gathering on Monday during, and
for a short while, after registration. Jitia Software Corporation is
sponsoring the Informal Gathering. The Welcome Reception Cocktail
Dinner,
hosted by PA Consulting Group, will be held on Tuesday. The Conference
Banquet will be on Wednesday night. And, a Southern Cookout with Jazz
Band
is scheduled for Thursday night.

OTHER EVENTS: A FIRESIDE CHAT with Jay W. Forrester, sponsored by HVR
Consulting, is scheduled for Wednesday. PhD STUDENT COLLOQUIUM: a second
annual event is scheduled to meet on Monday, July 23 from 13:00 till
20:00. This year the PhD Student Colloquium is being sponsored in part
by
South Bank University. The colloquium is organized and hosted by student
members of the Society. The aim of the colloquium is to give PhD
students
the opportunity to explain their research to experienced academics in
their field, and get feedback to improve their work. There will be five
presentations of PhD research proposals followed by two presentations by
faculty. The colloquium will end with dinner at the conference center
around 20:00. If you are interested in joining in the event either as a
listener or a presenter please contact Ozge Pala for further
information.

the
PhD Colloquium is June 1. The CONSULTANTS ROUNDTABLE, sponsored by
Accenture, is scheduled for lunchtime on Tuesday. Also available in
conjunction with the conference will be the SD CAREER LINK, a
volunteer-organized job exchange. A table displaying brochures about
international COURSEWORK IN SYSTEM DYNAMICS will be available this year
in
the exhibitor area. PhD SEMINAR SERIES TAPES: In 1999, Jay W. Forrester
conducted eleven, three-hour, doctoral seminars in system dynamics at
MIT.
Each videotaped session is on a different topic. Session descriptions
and
details for ordering will be available at the conference.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention is located just across the
street from the conference center. The CDC is offering our participants
and guests a GLOBAL HEALTH ODYSSEY TOUR. There will be a sign-up sheet
at
the registration desk (first-come, first-served).

NEW PRIZE FOR BEST STUDENT PAPER at the International System Dynamics
Conference: The System Dynamics Society announces the creation of a new
prize to be awarded at the annual international conference, starting
this
year in Atlanta. The new prize, to be awarded to the best paper
presented
at the conference by a student, recognizes the growing amount and
quality
of student work in the field of system dynamics. The student award this
year is funded by Jane and Allen Boorstein. To be considered for the
award, authors should identify themselves as eligible students. For
further details, please go to the website.

FIRST EVER POOL (BILLIARD) TOURNAMENT: Relax and meet old and new
friends
over the pool table. If you are interested in participating, please
check
the box on the registration form.

TENTATIVE CONFERENCE SCHEDULE: The conference organizing committee
reserves the right to change the program without notice. For a tentative

REGISTRATION PROCESS (participants staying on site): Make your room
reservation with the conference center first. Next, please complete the
conference registration form with payment information, (including your
Emory reservation number), and fax or post it to the address indicated.
Registrations can also be made by telephone with a credit card. Upon
receipt of the completed registration form, a confirmation will be sent.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Any cancellation or change in conference
registration must be advised in writing to the Society Office.
Cancellations before June 23, 2000 are subject to a cancellation fee of
50%. Thereafter, no refund will be given; however, a registration may be
transferred to a substitute participant.
