MODSIM Model - Watershed Management

Post by jwang@echo-on.net (Jie James Wan »

Hi Michel,

I had some experience to build watershed models for water resources management.
In fact I started to use a very simple model, ABC model to estimate the
quantiry of annaul water flow in a river basin. ABC model is a very simple
differential equation model with only three parameter developed by Prof.
Fering. I like the model because its clean cencepts.

In 1987 I did some study on different simulation model for watershed water
resources assessment. I concluded that there were so many models for watershed
simulation, the best model was the model exclusively developed based on the
simplest concept inherited from the ABC model. At that time I did some
study of rainfall data, its regeneration and disaggregation over watershed.

In 1992 I transfered the model to SD model by using ithink package.
I found it is really simple to costumize the concept for variety concerns
in water resources assessment. We may even include water use information
in SD model to generate different scenarios for water resources management.

Generally Speaking, SD model is good for simulation study of watershed
assessment, ithink/stella makes the study quite easy.

MODSIM Model - Watershed Management

Post by forda@mail.wsu.edu (Andy Ford) »

This is Andy Ford at WSU responding to the MODSIM question from Michel
Chevalier in the Dominican Republic. I believe MODSIM was developed by
John Labadie of Colorado Sate Univ. It represents the physical river
system as a series of nodes and links. A node can stand for both storage
and non-storage aspects of the river sucyh as reservoirs, demand/diversion
structures, inflow location, etc. A link represents reaches of the river,
canals, tunnels, etc. I get the impression that MODSIM is extremely
complicated-->to match the operational complexity of controlling the flows
in the river--its used by the Bureau of Reclamation out here in the West.
